Patients with Parkinson disease PD and their partners report deterioration in their sexual life. Sexual dysfunction SDan important and often ignored aspect, is common in PD. Motor and nonmotor symptoms are involved in limiting pleasure and disturbing function.
Yet, most older couples whether gay or straight report a sexual pulse that, while declining in terms of frequency and intensity, is certainly palpable. The longer term pair-bonds of older couples, some of whom have been together for decades and have a shared history. Greater emotional intimacy and the capacity to truly see and be seen by our partners, resulting in the potential of optimal sexuality, and the possibility of intimacy-driven sexual behavior as opposed to strictly mechanistic and performance-based sex. Sensate focus is a sex therapy technique introduced by the Masters and Johnson team. Sensate focus has been used to treat problems with body image, erectile dysfunction, orgasm disorders, and lack of sexual arousal. The exercises are conducted by the couple at home, between therapy sessions.
